Dan Jenkins to be historian for National Football
MORRISTOWN, N.J. — Sportswriter Dan Jenkins, whose career has spanned more than 60 years and included hundreds of Sports Illustrated articles as well as novels and screenwriting credits, has been appointed to a three-year term as historian for the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame.
In the post, he is to counsel the NFF during the College Football Hall of Fame Selection process, and write occasional articles for publication by the foundation, the group announced Tuesday.
"I married a homecoming queen, which means I know as much about college football as the next person, as long as the next person is not Darrell Royal or Bear Bryant," Jenkins said in a statement, referring to two legendary college football coaches.
Jenkins, 75, of Fort Worth, Texas, wrote for several newspapers before joining Sports Illustrated in 1962. He retired from the magazine in 1985. His byline tops a Golf Digest column, and his latest novel, "Slim and None," was published in May.
